Alliance members have followed the so-called “Utility Tax” since it was announced last May. The monopoly utilities have proposed a fixed charge ( $30-$70 per month) for all ratepayers. Even at the low end, a Utility Tax of $30 / month is three times the national average. This tax would increase utility bills for millions of working people, especially those who live in apartments or small homes that use less electricity. In addition to increasing bills for most small users, the Utility Tax flips the incentives for solar and energy efficiency – why take any planet-saving measures when you have to pay an excessive bill regardless of usage??
It is not too late to stop this measure from going into effect in July. Thanks to the broad coalition (over 220 organizations already) opposing the Utility Tax, there is now a bill to repeal this egregious measure.
