This month’s call features Shaina Nanavati, organizer from the Reclaim Our Power Utility Justice Campaign (ROP). They will present ROP’s call for a statewide transformation of PG&E into Golden State Energy (GSE), drawing from their recent report (link) with San Francisco’s Local Agency Formation Commission. The report examined the potential benefits of GSE and identified research areas that can continue to define an alternative to the investor-owned utility model.
SB 350, the Golden State Energy Act, was signed into California law in 2020 as part of a negotiated deal to bring PG&E out of bankruptcy. Authored as a backstop, Golden State Energy is legally defined as a not-for-profit public benefit corporation that would be the receiver of PG&E’s assets in the case of its failure as a company.
The Reclaim Our Power Utility Justice Campaign is a coalition of fire survivors, environmental justice communities, people with disabilities, ratepayers, and workers that centers those most impacted in the solutions and decision making for a just energy future.
