Despite Governor Newsom’s self-serving claims to the contrary, this year’s California legislative
session represents a huge setback in the efforts of California communities to address their energy
needs and climate change by taking control of their local energy systems.
This analysis, put together by the Alliance Steering Committee, focuses on two particular disasters: SB 846 and SB 884. The former threatens the planned shut down of the Diablo Canyon Nuclear Power Plant and gives $1.4 billion of taxpayer funds to PG&E for upgrades to this failed project. Similarly, SB 884 facilitates $100 billion ratepayer-funded hand-out under the auspices of “wildfire mitigation” rather than implementing the needed community energy alternatives.
